May be infection: Infection, particularly bacterial vaginosis, is the most common cause of foul-smelling vaginal discharge. Normal discharge is clear or white, and may have a slight odor but usually doesn't smell. Poor hygiene, as in other parts of the body, can be a culprit too-it's best to wash the external area w/ mild soap and water during your shower, and never douche! if the smell bothers you, see your dr.

Vaginal infection: If the vagina doesn&#x27;t pass the &quot;whiff&quot; test and your own nose is offended, then it is probably a vaginal infection that needs to be evaluated and treated by a GYN MD. Don&#x27;t &quot;whiff&quot; on the opportunity to give your nose and &quot;others&quot; a much needed break with resolution.

Be cautious: Vaginal odor is not necessarily a lack of cleanliness.  In fact trying to "clean" your vagina too aggressively can damage the skin and lining of the vagina causing more irritation.  Often a "smelly, fishy" vaginal odor is related to a benign overgrowth of normal vaginal bacteria.  A condition called bacterial vaginosis.  This can be treated by our doctor.  Hope this helps.

If you have a change in color, texture, odor or amount of vaginal discharge ; problems such as pain, itching burning with urination or sex or redness/swelling  then it is best to see your gynecologist for evaluation ; accurate assessment.

Fishy?: The most common symptom of Bacterial Vaginosis is an abnormal homogeneous off-white vaginal discharge (especially after vaginal intercourse) that may be accompanied by an unpleasant (usually fishy) smell.  STDs could also be involved.  
These conditions would require antibiotics, BV would also benefit from probiotics and diet changes. See PCP
