how to know if a skin growth is something to worry about or not? i have a small growth on my face just under my left eye.  it started out looking like i was getting a pimple.  i tried to "pop" the pimple but could not.  it hurt while i was tring to "pop"

To : To be safe your best bet would be to visit your primary care doctor or a dermatologist. It sounds like this may be a fibroma, cyst, or even a mole. It is very difficult to say without actually seeing the lesion in question. You may need a biopsy of the lesion to determine exactly what it is and the best course of action. The fact that your father has skin cancer is even more reason for you to be evaluated since certain types of skin cancer have a genetic component (most common being melanoma) so being evaluated is important regardless of wether or not your lesion looks like your father's.

Not really.: Ak stands for "actinic keratosis" - they are small crusty bumps caused by chronic sun damage. Dermatologists usually freeze them with liquid nitrogen; for severe cases a strong cream containing 5-FU or Imiquimod is used. Skin tags can be clipped off, or if they are large enough, you can tie a thread around each one to cut off blood supply. But most people (wisely, i think) let their doctor do this.

Molluscum: Best to treat would be under the care of a dermatologist as scarring and or skin color changes are common, hypo or hyperpigmentation. Lesions close to the eye are treated with the help of an ophthalmologist

Skin Tags: Skin tags occur with age. A dermatologist can remove them with cryotherapy, excision or electrocautery. Home remedies include tea tree oil, apple cider vinegar, and lemon juice. Having multiple skin tags is associated with insulin resistance in diabetes, a high body mass index, and high triglycerides. HPV, pregnancy and genetics can also play a role.

Probably keratosis : This sounds as if these are seborrheic keratosis that can either be frozen or scraped off. Some docs may also use lasers for this.
