Check with your doc: This could be a lot of stuff. Or possibly a falsely abnormal result. Check with your lung doc. It may indicate early lung disease. Better be safe.

Cough, wheeze: The 2 most common symptoms are cough and wheezes.  These mean he/she may have reactive airways disease (asthma).

Depends on med: If using a rescue inhaler, like albuterol, could benefit from a regular dose steroid / long-acting / combo inhaler to reduce need for other. Write down time when using inhaler ; then take to your dr. For review and medication optimization.

Food's not the key: The stuff you see on the internet about this-or-that food or 'super-food' being very good/bad for this particular disease is almost all made up as entertainment. Eat sensibly and manage your disease carefully as your physician directs.

Recommendation: Make sure you take your chronic medicines. Take your short-acting medicine before exercise, and do an incremental exercise as you can tolerate. Only avoid food you can be allergic to, eat and live healthy and avoid begin around smokers. You'll be fine. Good luck.

just had a pft and was told that i have small airway disease showing obstructions in my small airways. what does that mean? i.e. asthma or copd or something else? born at 27.5 weeks and on vent as baby.

Still controversial: Small airway is considered the primary defect in asthma but one cannot diagnose the presence of asthma by small airway obstruction alone.  In fact it is often present in seemingly well controlled asthma. I presume that your fvc and fev-1 were normal and thus would not lose sleep over it.  COPD is also not diagnosed by this measure.

RAD: RAD is a simple descriptor for what an overactive natural lung defense. If anyone inhales chlorine gas, the lung protective mechanism closes the small airways to stop gas entry that would injure the delicate inner membranes . It re-opens if the exposure stops. RAD in its mildest form is sometimes called cough variant asthma but the term can be applied to infectious causes or true asthma.

COPD: People who have chronic reactive airway disease for years may go on to copd. Otherwise you may only periodically wheeze on exposure to certain triggers like animal hair. In between episodes you shouldn't experience sob or chest tightness. Burping is often a nervous habit of air swallowing and only causing more burping ?tension. I recommend getting a proper diagnosis by consulting a pulmonologist.

COPD: You have a form of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) which isn't your fault but happens to people from breathing the air we live in and/or second-hand smoke and/or bad luck. See your doctor as there are a variety of inhaler treatments that may very well help you. Be gentle with yourself: you're not 18 anymore. You may need to modify your exercise regimen but exercise is still advised.
