got blood taken and was told i have slightly elevated wbc and need to go back in a month and re-check to make sure it's ok. should i be concerned?

Accepted Answer

Probably not: This could be almost anything: a mild viral infection, a lab error, a transient bacterial infection, etc.  If it were very high they would have brought you back to re-check it much sooner than a month.

It will be important to have a "complete" white blood cell count when it is repeated, so you and your doctors know the numbers of each type of white cell.

No: This may be normal for you.

MGUS: This type of protein disorder is difficult to characterize at first, but the good news is that it's not showing the definitive signs of multiple myeloma or one of the other related serious disorders. This needs to be monitored closely, though, by a rheumatologist or immunologist.               Best of luck to you.

Not likely: An elevated WBC usually just means that your body is under stress and is expected with a sinus infection.  A rash can be from any number of things (including medicines, stress, and viruses) but is rarely a sign of any cancer.  Sinus infections and rashes are both much more common than cancers.

Nothing: It is of no clinical significance.  Just reporting incidental findings of normal variants.

i have an atypical lymphocytes 13 % slightly elevated wbc which is 10.50, normal differential count normal esr and crp.

Accepted Answer

Consider a workup: I'd be curious to see if these lymphocytes could have an abnormal  clone.  First step would be a repeat test.  If still showing atypical lymphocytes, a blood test called a flow cytometry would be the next step.  Most causes of atypical lymphocytes, especially in young patients, are benign. Talk to your doctor or try to see a hematologist if possible.

i have slightly elevated wbc consisting of high lymphocytes as well as high neutrophils for two cbc tests taken about a month apart. what can this be?

How do you FEEL?: Unless the absolute neutrophil count and/or the absolute lymphocyte count are quite far from their respective reference ranges, or abnormal cells are present, it means nothing. I've shot my neuts to almost 20,000 by taking a cold swim. The ranges are set so that several percent of healthy folks fall outside, and counts fluctuate wildly even hour-to-hour. Stop worrying and focus on fitness. Cheers.

Relax for now: We are often asked to see many patients for abnormal or elevated blood counts. Often these are not dangerous problem, but other doctor who are not blood specialists want to be sure. I would wait to see what happens at that visit.

Sed rate: A sed rate of 7 is normal  the other findings are probably indicative of a mild viral infection   If worried about aids I would get an HIV test

i have elevated b12 (990) and slightly elevated wbc. aching legs for 3 months and burning on tops of feet and hands. is this all coincidental or..??

Accepted Answer

Labs are not key: High B12 is due to a little extra carrier protein. WBC is not the explanation if all the cells are well formed. Look for another explanation, possibly a photo sensitizing medicine.
