my hostel mates r suffering from chicken pox. i already had it twice 3 yrs ago.i have started having small red skin rashes. not 3rd time pox right?

Very unlikely: It is very unlikely to get chicken pox for a third time.  Sometimes, people think they had chicken pox but actually had some other rash.  In those folks, they actually may not be immune to chicken pox, and may catch it during an outbreak.  If getting a rash, one can check with a doctor to see what it might be.

Viruses, mostly.: Viral rashes are common in kids; chicken pox is the most popular, but just about any virus can cause a rash. Other possibilities include allergic reactions to medications or food additives, contact dermatitis, atopic dermatitis, and other things. It's impossible to make a precise diagnosis without seeing the rash, so you should consult a dermatologist, especially if your son is running a fever.

Shingles?: If it looks like chicken pox but it’s only in one area, it could be shingles.  I’d have the Pediatrician or a Dermatologist take a look, though, as it’s unusual for a young child to get shingles.  Not unheard of, but atypical.

Yes: When you have chicken pox, you will have three types of rash:  you will have red bumps, little bubbles called vessicles filled with clear or slightly yellow fluid, and scabs.  The rash itches terribly, and can be soothed with oatmeal baths, topical lotions, tylenol (acetaminophen) and benadryl.  Swollen lumps in the neck and other places are called "lymph nodes, " and are a sign that the immune system is working.

Might be strep: A combination of a sore throat and a rash may indicate a strep infection. Have him seen by your doctor to visualize the rash and his throat. It is important to diagnose measles or chickenpox to prevent spread. All the best.

Rash: Although most childhood rashes are not serious, any rash that causes pain could be concerning. Chicken pox is not known to cause pain. Nor does it typically localize to one area of the body. However, shingles, which is caused by the same virus as chicken pox, can do these things. An examination by your doctor is warranted so the appropriate course of treatment can be started.

Chicken pox: You are contagious when you have shingles; you can give your child Chicken Pox if he has not received his vaccine for it.  If he is over 16 months and is up to date with his vaccinations, he should be safe, at least from a severe case.  CP, unlike Shingles, appears all over the body, usually starting around the head and torso, 2 to 3 weeks after contact and appears in crops of bumps &amp; blisters.
