Most have no sx: If it wasn't for the itch & the difficulty these kids have trying to sleep, we wouldn't need to treat this at all. Old wives tales have you believe the kids grind their teeth but that is bull. The allergic reaction that some kids get to the oily material the eggs are laid in is the basic problem. Short term help using a cold wash to remove the oil & soothing creams can help baby rest.Rx takes time.

Yes and no: I guess, you can look at this from 2 different angles. The "yes" angle is that their hygiene is not as good as that of adults (not universally true...), so they are more prone to contract pinworms than adults would. There is nothing wrong in their immune system, though, that makes them more prone to acquiring it and that's the "no" angle.

No: Many children with pinworm infections have no symptoms and may never be aware of the infection, but parents notice the worms in the diaper or toilet after a bowel movement.  Itching around the anus associated with scratching is a symptom, sometimes associated with restless sleep (itching is often worse at night). Local irritation and dry skin  can also cause discomfort that  responds to scratching.

Personal hygiene: Infestations begin as the eggs are ingested from contaminated fingers. These fingers touch places that babies sit and play in like sandboxes, day care centers, etc, where the eggs are shed from a diapered bottom. The more finger to mouth activity the higher likelihood of infection.When you add a ready source of eggs in their environment, the chances also increase.

Pinworms: If you child is still passing pinworms, i would keep. Him home until he appears clear.

Repeat: For pinworm if you are using mebendazole, you can repeat the dose in 2 weeks. That will take care of the infestation.

i have pinworms and will treat my whole family with vermox. what is the correct dosage for children and adults? my kids are age 3 months to 17 years.

Accepted Answer

Vermox: This medication is discontinued in the us.  To treat pinworms, adult and children have the same dosage, which is 100mg x 1 and may repeat in 2 weeks to make sure of eradication.

can i give my 18 month old reese's for pinworms? my daughter caught them from school and now her little brother has them. i considered diatomaceous earth but i'm not sure about either of them as far as the safety of them on children and toddlers

Not a sign of timing: I would recommend you contact her doctor for treatment. We can’t treat through this part of the platform. Your doctor can likely prescribe medication via a phone or telemedicine visit. Pinworms generally come out at night. Also, the doctor will want to make sure they are pinworms as opposed to another type of worm. Pinworms look like very tiny thread-like worms.
