i've seen a lot of products in the store containing a plant-derived sweetener called stevia. how safe is it? are there any side effects from its use?

Safe: Other than an aftertaste, it does not have side effects. However, do not expect using a sugar substitute to result in weight loss, unless you exercise and reduce caloric intake.
Wish you good health! - Have a diet rich in fresh vegetables, fruits, whole grains, milk and milk products, nuts, beans, legumes, lentils and small amounts of lean meats. Avoid saturated fats. Drink enough water daily, so that your urine is mostly colorless. Exercise at least 150 minutes/week and increase the intensity of exercise gradually. Do not use tobacco, alcohol, weed or street drugs in any form. 
Practice safe sex, if you have sex.

Safe substitutes: Stevia is the best non calorie plant base sugar substitute.Do not use other chemicals.
may use honey in between.
High protein diet,handful of nuts daily- Salad &amp; salmon diet. Keep off of fructose &amp; fructose products.

Maybe.: Both products are advertised as coming from natural sources, so it would seem that they should be safe. They just haven't been used long enough yet to prove their safety.

Non-commital: Stevia is not healthy nor non-healthy. It is a sugar substitute and may help people in controlling their intake of sugar. Moderation is generally a good idea. We do not know the long term effects.

No benefit: Since you are not diabetic, you are not benefiting by avoiding sugar, though not using sugar may help in weight control. There is no harm in using stevia from the evidence available so far.

Amount-dependent: While they're presumed to be safe in small amounts, these artificial sweeteners have been found to be harmful (at least to lab animals) in really high amounts taken over long periods of time.  The key is to minimize its use over the long term, doing without it when feasible.

Stevia: Why get away from stevia.  Stevia is really the best.  You could use agave but you are adding carbohydrate calories with it.
Stay with stevia.

My opinion: artificial sweeteners can make you shun healthy, filling, and highly nutritious foods while consuming more artificially flavored foods with less nutritional value.Artificial sweeteners may play another trick, too. Research suggests that they may prevent us from associating sweetness with caloric intake. As a result, we may crave more sweets, tend to choose sweet food over nutritious food
