Yes, but: Remember that thyroid medication is synthetically produced thyroid hormone just like a healthy thyroid gland would make - nothing artificial! side effects are usually related to dose.  Taking too much will mimic an overactive thyroid.

Multiple effects: A truly non-functioning thyroid with almost no thyroid hormone synthesis will show many symptoms: most commonly dry hair/nails/skin, mental slowing, loss of eyebrows, weight gain, heart slowing, constipation, menstrual/sexual dysfunction, swelling, et al. This definitely requires thyroid replacement. However, the most commonly seen mild hypothyroidism (tsh 4-10) usually has very few effects seen.

Safe: Hi. Thyroid extracts are safe (extracted from pig thyroids from slaughterhouse). They don't have the purity of levothyroxine, and they have some batch-to-batch variability, but they work, and they were all we had, we'd all be using them. Do I recommend them? No. some patients want dead animal thyroid extracts, so  I'll do what makes the patient happy as long as I do no harm. Good luck!

Accepted Answer

Yes : Increase of any medication, past the optimum dosing, can cause side effects.  This includes blood pressure medications, cholesterol meds, antidepressants, antipsychotics, you name it. 

Too much of thyroid rx can basically cause you sxs of hyperthyroidism - jittery, anxious, heart palpitations, increase blood pressure, heat intolerancek elevated heart rate, loss of appetite, loss of weight, etc.

More complicated: Don't know how one can tell which thyroxine tablets are best absorbed in a one individual, because of the complicating factors. If having trouble, one can save up some money and buy the name brand every time. Then, eat similar amounts and similar types of food near the time when thyroxine is taken, plus take it at the same time every day. Calcium, iron, antacids, etc., changes the absorption.

No thyroid: If you truly have no thyroid then you will get slower and slower and colder and colder, gain weight, begin to talk like a frog croaks, go mad, go into a coma and die.

Google myxede,a and see if you look like that a bit yet. If not then you most likely have some thyroid.

Very safe: Unless you over do it, then you can induce what we call "iatrogenic hyperthyroidism."  during this state you can feel hyperactive, palpitations, increase bowel movements, tremors, sweating, can't sleep...  Long term, this can create problem with heart structure and bone problem (osteoporosis).  Some people might get a rash with the pill due to the dye.

Accepted Answer

No: Thyroid controls metabolism but not sexual development or maturation. Pituitary controls both thyroid & testes but if he's only missing thyroid, then testes should be ok. However, if testosterone is low, need to figure out why. Low t might be due to testicular issue (coincident w/thyroid) or be due to pituitary problem (see above) or perhaps liver (via excess iron - hemochromatosis), etc. Go c doc.
