Free weight injury: This is why I prefer machines. Always use a spotter when increasing reps or weights. Overuse should not have lingered three weeks. Sounds most like a cuff injury or a capsular tear like a SLAP lesion. Exam would help but an MRI would be definitive.

Change routine: You probably have torn or injured your shoulder rotator cuff, which can be a persistent "plague" on your exercise routine.  Do not do the same thing that caused it for a while and in any event exercise through stiffness but not  through pain.  If this was at a gym, perhaps there is a consultant who can advise you about alternate exercises.  You could also see a physiatrist for advice.

Hard to say: If you have pain, there's a good chance the injury is where it hurts. You need to say what makes you feel you have an injury. Some are easily diagnosed on the surface by looking, palpating and moving the shoulder. Others require imaging such as x-ray or MRI to visualize the precise nature of the injury. But if there is not pain or loss of motion, do not worry.

Shoulder pain: While weightlifting could be from the acromioclavicular joint, the rotator cuff, the glenohumeral joint or a combination of all three. First proper mechanics are needed. Second one must make certain that there not any underlying issues. Finally often reducing the weight helps. And spending some time strengthening the smaller  muscles of the shoulder girdle such as building up rotators and the biceps and triceps and the trapezius.

Orthopedic surgeon: You may have to curtail your weight lifting in order to allow possible sprain of the shoulder to heal. See an orthopedic surgeon if symptoms persist or worsen as there could be deeper shoulder injury like rotator cuff tears present.

May be instability: Impingement usually occurs with shoulder press or military press.  You may have experienced shoulder instability.  Impingement typically occurs in older patients (>35 or 40) while instability occurs in younger patients (< 30.)  initial treatment for instablity involves a physical therapy program.  Impingement is treated with nsaids, physical therapy, and steroid injections.
