I have given this : The name, "suffocation" for patient records because it is so common. Your brain is simply indicating that the use of oxygen (oxidation) is poor. Commonest cause is poor diet and vitamin b deficiency from dietary sugar.

Depends: If you are 19 years old and have no medical conditions and you are taking no medications there is very low likelihood of serious condition. If  you have recently been sick with a respiratory infection, use oral contraceptives or recently traveled distance by plane or car it may be related to that.  If symptoms are persisting be seen by a medical provider today to have exam and testing as needed.

You should see a physician right away, to rule out other causes such as cardiac or pulmonary disorders.

Orthopnea: A serious cause would be incipient congestive heart failure. This is an early sign of a weakening heart muscle as the heart works harder when lying down compared to sitting up. Another possibility is simply focussing on your respirations which is an involuntary reflex. However focussing on your breathing can give one the sensation of shortness of breath. I recommend seeing your MD for assurance.
