Valtrex (valacyclovir): Oral antivirals will clear infection. However inflammation and pain may persist. Oral steroids or neuron tin can be used to help with pain. Neuron tin is slowly increased over time up to 2400 mg per day. An alternative for shingle pain is Alpha lipoid acid which is supposed to help the nerve pain.

Are you sure?: It would be very unusual to have shingles just on the lips, without lesions on one side of the face.  If the lesions are only on your lips, it's more likely to be herpes simplex than shingles.

Shingles: Although there is not a “cure” for shingles- valacyclovir (valtrex), Acyclovir (zovirax) ; Famciclovir (famvir) can help symptoms.

Herpes zoster: Shingles, herpes zoster, is caused by the chicken pox virus. The virus lays dormant from our childhood in the dorsal root ganglion in the spinal column waiting for reactivation. The older we get the more likely we are to have them by age 80, 80% of people will have them.  It can be treated with antivirals like Acyclovir and valtrex (valacyclovir). These days it can be prevented by a vaccine.

Yes: Antiviral medicines, such as acyclovir, famciclovir, or valacyclovir, to reduce the pain and the duration of shingles. Otc acetaminophen, aspirin, or ibuprofen, to help reduce pain during an attack of shingles. Sometimes capsiacin.  Topical antibiotics, applied directly to the skin, to stop infection of the blisters. For severe cases of shingles, some doctors may have their patient (controversial).

Topical treatment: Can't really expedite healing...  But you can control pain fairly well with topical Lidocaine (patch, ointment, phonophoresis)
more importantly, find out why you got this condition (very uncommon in your age group); complete workup is needed.

my nana has had ms for about 20 years now and she keeps getting shingles this is her 3rd time! she cries because of the pain. any treatment options?

Shingles: We now have a shingles vaccine, which can  help prevent further episodes, and in this case, would strongly recommend.  The pain can be managed with Lyrica (pregabalin).  Unlikely that the shingles has any relationship to her MS, but would be wise for her to be taking a medication to stabilize the MS also.
