Pain medication: Gabapentin is a good pain medication for shingles pain. Try some advil (ibuprofen) or ibuprophen too if you don't have liver or kidney disease.

: It is not feasible to provide an opinion without additional history, physical examination may be some tests. It would be prudent to see your doctor to see if you may be depressed. Depression is treatable. Counter-intuitive as it may seem, exercise may help. Start with low intensity exercise such as walking and gradually increase the intensity as tolerated. Drink more water. It is concerning: due to a possibility of a common form of cutaneous neuropathic pain that  is associated with herpes zoster infection. It has been estimated that approximately 10-20% of the population will develop HZ during their lifetime. Individuals over 50 are particularly susceptible because of reduced cell-mediated immunity.

Shingles: Covering will help but it could still be touched and passed that way. I would not take a chance. You could be serving someone who is not immune to varicella or immune compromised. Be safe!

When skin is broken: Shingles skin lesions have contagious viruses from the time the skin lesions begin to break (feel damp or sticky) until after the skin is healing, covered with dry scabs or dry skin. If there is any moisture coming through the shingles rash, then one can presume there are still viruses there. The viruses are called zoster, varicella zoster, or herpes zoster viruses.

Not likely: Unless you see fluid filled rashes almost in a line, it is not likely to be shingles. It becomes clear with in 3-4 days. If it is on one side only then occipital neuralgia is a possibility and can be treated if persistent for weeks.

Hard to say: There may in fact be an underlying causation creating susceptibility to both, and one might consider an immune mediated process or even, something like one of the antiphospholipid antibody syndromes.  However, the shingles did not cause the venous thrombosis.  Yet, the two items signal some general pathology, and worthwhile to fully evaluate.
