after playing football a month ago, i have developed a painful lump just above my shin. each week i play it seems to get more and more painful.

Lump: It could be a bone bruise , shin splint, or a stress fracture. I would get an xray and go from there.

Probably : blood. Ice the area, take over the counter pain reliever. If not better need to see a physician.

Contusion : its soft tissue contusion. It take at least 2 month to resolve assuming no more irritation to area. It's close to bone and minimal blood supply.

Shin splints: This could be shin splints if it is mostly in the front along the bone with small amount radiating into the muscle. If the majority of pain is in the muscle, this could be other things. A strain or injury could cause this. Any past injuries to that calf? Something more concerning could be compartment syndrome.  While this is rare, if the pain gets a lot worse, go to the er as it can be serious.

Lipoma: Lipoma is a faft deposition in the soft tissue of different size, which are soft freely movable non tender most of the time, sometimes it feels like a cyst.

SEE SOMEONE: Lipomas can get large and are very characteristically soft feeling. That one sounds quite large and can cause you some irritation. Go get it checked out and removed before it gets larger.

Fascia hernia - Yes: The leg muscles next to your large leg bone (tibia) form the anterior and lateral compartments. The fascia ("hot dog casing") around the muscles bellies can develop a hernia. This can occur  in conjunction with what is called an exercise-induced exertional compartment syndrome. Theuncomfortable/painful muscle tightness that occurs with exercise, subsides with rest. Seek orthopaedic evaluation.

A superficial sen-: -sory nerve may have been injured. Because of no lacerations involved it is called a neuropraxia  which means nerve contusion with no disruption of the anatomical make up. These have a great chance of recovery in a few days to a week. If not better it means the nerve must regenerate from the area of injury down. This takes a while, as the progress @ about 1mm/day from the spot of injury.

Turf Toe: Grinding sensation is concerning.  Best to see a doctor to check for a fracture or tendon rupture.

Bruise: What you are describing sounds like a typical bruise to me however if the pain continues, it is a good idea to see a doctor and get an X Ray done to rule out an underlying bony injury.
