Maybe not: Central low back pain is most often due to inflammation/arthritis of the disk/joints in the spine or inflammation/injury the soft tissues (muscles/tendons) .  Occasionally, lumbar nerve root compression can begin as midline pain but this is certainly not the most likely cause.

The pain with coughing is concerning for a herniated disc.  If weakness or numbness in the feet or legs are present he should get checked

Sitting hurts-causes: You need to see your pcp as you may have a herniated lumbar disc and need MRI to diagnose.  Is there any pain radiating down leg(s)?  If so tell your pcp this as well.  Also be careful picking up objects. Bend your knees and don't bend over.
