Ultrasound: Did they ask for you to have a repeat ultrasound in a week or two? The ultrasound that you describe above really was very early and would be best to have repeated.

i was just told by my mfm that i will need an ultrasound every 2 weeks to monitor babies and their heart beat. im 11 weeks with twins. is this many ultrasounds considered safe? they usually only take 3-5 minutes and do them abdominal now?

Yes: These are not radiation or other worrisome agents. Think of them as modified sound waves that both you &amp; baby will experience every day from a variety of sources. The procedure has been used  for decades with no problems for fetus or mother.

Heartbeat: The baby's heart starts beating at the 6 week point, and it may be visible on ultrasound somewhere between 6-8 weeks.  It can be heard on doppler somewhere between 10-12 weeks.

It means that your : Ob may do genetic & other medical tests (e.g., for prenatal infections & exposures)  & consult fetal-maternal medicine specialists to help find the cause & assist in determining the optimal timing & mode of delivery. Fetal pericarditis: The fluid around the heard called "pericarditis". Isolated findings means probably nothing.

"pericardial fluid 2 mm or greater in thickness may be associated with structural anomalies or hydrops, but its clinical significance in the absence of these associated findings has not been evaluated".

can you tell by ultrasound if a baby has congential heart defects?

Yes: The ultrasound technology has  advanced significantly to be able to detect heard defects pretty reliably now a days. Occassionally small defects are not seen. There is also some variation based on how good the ultrasound technician is.
