Eventually...: It's not recommended to have intercourse soon after birth because it increases the chances of getting an infection in the uterus and is frequently painful.  Most docs recommend a 4-6 week vacation even if you've had a c/section.  If you had an episiotomy or laceration repair, you can tear out your stitches and have a difficult time healing.  It's best to consult with your Ob about your specific case.

It is: Part of the postpartum changes you go through is a rapid change in hormones.  The estrogen and Progesterone that were surging through your pregnancy suddenly drop down to normal or even low levels.  So it is pretty normal to not be interested in sex.  Plus your body has gone through a pretty big trauma and you need time to recover.

6 weeks: For many years obs have always said 6 weeks.  I would imagine most patients do not wait that long. With an episiotomy, we feel 6 weeks are needed for complete healing.  Without an episiotomy there is no need to wait 6 weeks.  The uterus takes about 6 weeks to return to normal size but this should not be a factor.  With a cesarean certainly 6 weeks makes sense.  In short, i would suggest 6 weeks.

Lack of sleep: A new baby is a lot of work.  Nursing is also very time consuming early on.  Get your family and friends to help you with the baby as much as possible.  Only you can nurse the baby but everyone else can do everything else.  Let them help you so that you can get as much sleep as possible.  Sleep deprivation is the main reason for lack of sex drive after giving birth.

Need postpartum appt: We usually recommend that you wait until your postpartum visit in 4 to 6 weeks, so your doctor can make sure you are back to normal. That way you can also discuss birth control options. Hope this helps!
