Condoms are the best protection for STDs, but only about 60% effective in preventing pregnancy.

Skipping one day should not affect your chances of conceiving.  Skipping 3 days could decrease your chances.

Ovulation is the process of readying the egg in the ovary and the event of ovulation is the expression of the egg from the ovary. The sperm need to be close to the egg when it leaves the ovary to cause impregnation. So, one is most fertile on the five days prior to the event of ovulation.
