They have been known to live for five days and that is the limit we often use in medicine.  One is most fertile during the five days prior to ovulation. That represents the length of time a sperm may live before impregnating the readied egg.

: An erect penis is secreting sperm continuously during sex, not just at climax. It only takes one getting through to get pregnant. There is no valid way to calculate risk in this exposure. Sexual activity on any day of a woman's cycle can result in pregnancy. If this episode did not get you pregnant, similar sex practices likely will at some point. If it matters get on the pill or use condoms

Pregnancy?: The only way to prove ovulation, especially with "irregular periods" is by testing for production of "LH" by a urine test,  which occurs just prior to ovulation.  Since higher stimulation of your ovary (which occurs after mid thirties) can produce ovulation earlier , you may have ovulated in September close to ovulation.  Get a serum HCG test for pregnancy in 2-3 weeks to be certain.
