A : A convulsion is a type of seizure. Not all seizures are convulsions. Some seizures involve staring spells (petit mal or absence seizures). Some seizures involve certain almost purposeful activity that is the same each time. Some seizures can involve only one limb without loss of consciousness. A grand mal (also called major motor seizure) involves loss of consciousness, rigidity of the body followed by jerking motions of the whole body. This is followed by a period of unresponsiveness called the post ictal state. There is a type of convulsive seizure that happens in young children with fever. Alcohol withdrawal can also cause seizures.

Caused by alcohol?: If this person had blackouts, i  assume from heavy  alcohol use, he/she can also have a alcohol withdrawal seizure.   After any seizure there can be a period of confusion.  If heavy use of alcohol is involved, then he/she needs to be detoxed with the help of a professional or in a rehabilitation program.   If there is no alcohol abuse then a consultation with a doctor is warranted.

Seizures?: If you mean "seizures", then yes there are some hormonal problems that can produce seizures or reduce your seizure threshold if you are seizure prone. The only common ones are diabetes with very high or low glucose levels, uncommon disorders which produce abnormal blood pressure, and overactive thyroids. Check w/your doctor.

You should not drive until your doctors are able to figure out the cause of the seizure.

Don't put yourself or others at risk.  Get somebody to drive you there and back.
