Cold sore or Herpes: It is important to rule out Herpes simplex infection: recall your contact history and avoid lip contact with other people until clear. Consult a dermatologist or another physician for best management approach

: No, cold sores are nothing like this. Recurrent oral herpes lesions (cold sore) are on the outside of the mouth and, as the name suggests, are blisters or open sores.

had a cold sore and a moderately swollen lymph node pop up a day or two ago. lymph node is about the size of small marble. tender too. overall i feel great though. thoughts? normal? i have read that it is common to get swollen lymph nodes with/herpes

Keep watch: A local lymph node usually gets large with primary herpes infection, which is what you may have had. Watch the lymph node and assess its size every week. If it doubles in size, other lymph nodes become larger, you get fever or the node becomes painful, it would be prudent to consult a doctor.

can a cold sore be just one bump or is it almost always a cluster of small bumps?

Oral herpes: Clustered bumps are most common, but single lesion is possible. More important is how the bump changes over several days. Typical herpes starts as red bump(s), within 1-2 days become blister-like with clear fluid, then over a few days pimple-like (pus), open sores, and scabs; and healing over the next week. Best Rx is a single large dose (2 grams) of valacyclovir (Valtrex). Discuss w/ your doctor.

Nothing: Give it some time. None of the creams are as effective as prescription valacyclovir or Acyclovir pills taken at the very onset (prodrome) of the next attack. Get your prescription now so you will be prepared to take (usually 2 Grams) at the first tingling next attack. It is very safe.

is there a way to never get herpes again ? if not then how man more times in my life will i get a cold sore i had two my whole life and they were about 6 years apart .. i dont want to get more ?

Herpes recurs: Unfortunately, at this time, there is no cure for Herpes. There are medications to lessen the symptoms; you should speak to your doctor about those, which are taken at the beginning of the first symptom (often a tingling feeling), often before you can see a sore. Avoidance of sun/use of sunscreen may help also. There is no way to know how often it will occur.

how long do i keep using abreva on my cold sore? and i can see pink under it & it's drying up.

Abreva: It is recommended that this be used for up to 10 days but not necessarily if the cold sore is healing.
