Depends: Shotty lymph nodes measuring 1.2 cm or less in diameter is not considered abnormal if the nodes are located at neck  or inguinal region.

Sleeping funny: It's possible that "sleeping funny" might cause a muscle pain.  Pain from a vein is unlikely but a swollen lymph node is quite possible.  Is there a lumpy feel to that part of your neck that is not the same on the other side?  Did the pain continue beyond the next day? A swollen lymph node may be from an infection in your mouth, perhaps a cavity in a tooth, or perhaps a skin infection (acne).

my little boy has three swollen lymph nodes down one side of his neck (starts in his hair line then goes down to mid neck) for over 3 weeks now. how long can they take to go down? dr has seen them and said they are just reactive lymph nodes?

: Movable small lymph nodes (diameter less than 1.5 cm)  are often found in the anterolateral neck in children.  They may not disappear but may get smaller and stay.  Chance of malignancy, e.g., lymphoma,  is extremely low.

Lymphadenopathy: It is important to diagnose your condition - and anything with the lymph nodes I regard as 'serious'. Since you've had symptoms for a number of months, you need to see a doctor. There's a list of different infections that could cause this, and possibly other diseases too. Lymph nodes are an important part of the immune system and therefore you need to get this checked so you can get better.

Monitoring Centers: The lymphatic system absorbs and carries things too big to go into the arteries and veins like bacteria eaten by white cells and digested food.  The lymph nodes "taste" the lymph to see if anything bad is there like bacteria, viruses, cancers, etc.  When it detects a problem, it alerts the immune system and your body reacts.  They enlarge in response to the inflammation they create when they react.

Needs follow up: Asymptomatic but persistent neck nodes can be due to chronic sinus or nasal issues, allergies, lymphadenopathy disorders such as castlemans disease, etc. And also sometimes due to lymphomas which are low grade in nature. If there is no satisfactory cause identified over time then evaluation by an infectitous disease or hematology specialist may be of use.

When accompanied by inflammation of the ileum, &amp; crohn's disease has been excluded, consider bacterial infection caused by yersinia enterocolitica, campylobacter, salmonella. Adenitis may also reflect non-gi inflammatory processes in the abdomen.
