Excessive dryness: Applying an oil free hypoallergenic moisturizer after each cleansing with warm water and a gentle pH balanced cleanser can help prevent excessive dryness when using facial medications.  Salicylic acid and benzoyl peroxide are sometimes used together in acne regimens, but can be irritating for some people.

i have small bumps on my face and have been using a 2.5% benzoyl peroxide wash but it doesn't help or hurt. should i switch to salicylic acid wash?

Answer depends on: if you actually have acne vulgaris.  Peroxide and salicylic acid tends to be caustic to the skin over long period of time, so you need to have a moisturizer (if you have dry skin) or oily formula (for oily skin) in order to protect your skin especially from the sun.  Face and pore washing (NOT exfoliation) daily is also key, so use a mild soap without too many chemicals like Clearasil.

Too much too often: Benzoyl peroxide comes as 5% and 10%. The vehicle can also be a gel (most potent) to lotion to cream (least potent). It also doesn't have to be put on every day or twice a day. If it is irritating her skin tell her to hold back on the throttle, both in the formulation and the frequency. Acne is almost a right of passage of teenage hood and she will get through it as you and her mom did!

Yes, you can: Acne is commonly treated with multiple medicated products such as these.  Most people tolerate it well.   Redness and irritation is a potential problem, which is usually improved by using a hypoallergenic moisturizer, using the products less frequently, or stopping one of them completely.

Two products: These are two effective ingredients in acne treatments, but they work differently and I don't think are usually combined in the same product. Salicyclic acid aids exfoliation and prevents clogged pores. Benzoyl peroxide works by killing bacteria that cause breakouts.  They are both very drying so figuring out how much of each your skin can handle is important. I think you need two products:)

Acne care: Looking at and comparing the pros and cons of both salicylic acid vs benzoyl peroxide they are both very evenly matched with no real winners. I find benzoyl peroxide better for my acne, but then there are also may people who would disagree and go with salicylic acid is  better at treating acne. So if you have never used either treatments use one then the other for 30 days. See what is best.

Clearing pores: Benzoyl peroxide is a drying agent that kills the bacteria causing acne. Salicylic acid removes dead skin, unclogs pores, and kills the bacteria. Salicylic acid is more effective than benzoyl peroxide in clearing the pores. It also has less side-effects that benzoyl peroxide.
