does a spinal cord injury always mean paralysis?

Accepted Answer

No: Fortunately, not all  spinal cord injuries cause paralysis. Milder versions of the injury may simply contuse the cord and may result in little to no neurologic deficits. Other more severe  injuries may severley bruise or sever the cord causing a spectrum of neurologic deficits based on location and type of injury.  Full recovery is less likely with severe injuries.

i know cervical spinal cord injuries are a serious injury, but if a 80 old man could walk with a cervical spinal cord injury straight after the trauma, would that mean his cervical spinal cord injury was not life-threatening before he walked?

Accepted Answer

: Any general movement after a neck fracture can take an cause injury or amplification of an existing injury to the spinal cord. The standard of care after an event where neck injury is possible involves immobilizing the neck  in a neutral position before that person is moved.

if i have a spinal cord injury, what wheelchair transfer techniques are available?

See answer below: It all depends where you need to transfer to. Check out fasteddy07 on youtube where i demonstrate how to perform a variety of wheelchair transfers, on a shower bench, on a bed, in a car, from the floor etc... Of course, depending on the injury level, some transfers may not be possible independently.

Accepted Answer

No: I am not sure what you mean but neck "pops" are not necessary.  I have never heard of a person having a spinal cord injury by just moving their head as is usually expected (pops or not).

Get checked: If you are having symtpoms and given the nature of your fall it would be worthwhile getting checked.

See a doctor: Breathing is not optional. There are several causes why you may not be able to take a deep breath, which necessitates medical care, including infection, from prolonged not breathing deeply. Please.

Variable: It can range from simple tingling to complete numbness and weakness as well as loss of bowel and bladder function. Basically you cannot move that part of the body below the spinal cord injury.

Accepted Answer

Multiple modalities: Depends on level and complete verse incomplete. Passive stretching/range to start, pt, fluoidotherapy. Oral Baclofen or tizanidine can be beneficial. Can consider intrathecal Baclofen as well. Any ho? You can consider Botox injections to targeted muscles as well. Surgical release is a last ditch option. Make sure any pain or irritation is controlled as well as these can worsen spasticity.

Trust yourself: Sorry to hear about your story. You do not have to trust everybody, trust yourself, trust your family and friends, trust your docs. Help others affected by trauma by telling your story.

spinal cord injury & lost insurance. currently i am titrating off opiates. when i get to the end, what type of meds can i use to help withdrawals?

SCI pain: 1. It's a shame that you have lost your insurance. Please checkout https://www.Healthcare.Gov so that you can get insurance. 2. In the meantime, know that opioid withdrawal is uncomfortable but not life-threatening. 3. Contact your local va or academic medical center and see if you can get in their sci clinic. Generic pain meds can be cheap but no doc can prescribe w/o seeing you.
