Physical therapy.: Guarded weight bearing in a walking boot and physical therapy is the typical treatment.  Recovery varies,  4-16 weeks.

RICE: You should start with rice as a home treatment. After 48-72 hours you may switch to heat (instead of ice). As your pain starts to subside you may add stretching as tolerated, and massage. Once pain is gone, then gently return to activity as your strength, flexibility and proprioception need time to recover. If the pain persists see an orthopedic physician.

AnkleSpecialist ASAP: Please see an ankle specialist, who will most likely order an MRI to confirm his or her examination. Depending on the severity of the damage and your time tolerance to try conservative treatment, a surgical repair may be necessary.

PT: You should get set up with physical therapy to improve peroneal muscle strength and balance sense (proprioception).  See your primary care doctor or orthopaedic surgeon to get examined and a prescription for physical therapy.

A compression stocking will help swelling resolution.

Many of these recover with time but p.T. Is recommended.

Shoulder: Could be bursitis try ibuprofen 800mg 3 times a day for 4-5days with food and low heating pad.  Try to give it a rest

i have an avulsion of the distal fibula fracture due to a high ankle sprain. what is the the common treatment for this type of injury?

Depends: If the fracture is displaced it may need surgical fixation.  If its not displaced then bracing for 6-8 weeks minimum and then return to rehab until fully healed.  It can take several month to get full healing.  Other options include possible platelet or stem cell based therapies that may help healing faster/more fully.  Check out Regenexx.Com.

Wise to see a doc: It's important to have an x-ray and confirm or rule out a fracture. Also, most doctor's offices can give you various forms of immobilization such as an ankle brace or boot as well advice regarding treatment, rehab and recovery time. If there is no evidence of fracture the management of a severe ankle sprain can be suggested by your primary care provider. The management for a severe ankle sprain is extremely important to allow the soft tissues to heal and to retrain your ankle to prevent further sprains.
