Protect 'til surgery: Hopefully you have an isolated acl tear. You should avoid impact aerobic activities and any cutting activities until your torn acl is reconstructed. Surgery can be performed as soon as your knee appears/feels happy- decreased swelling, return of motion and good quadriceps (thigh muscle)  strength. This can be anywhere from several days to several weeks.
