While we need some sun exposure for vitamin d, skin cancers are on  the rise and may be prevented by avoiding excessive exposure to the sun and ultraviolet rays.

Not fast: Keep sunburn cool with moist cool/cold compresses.  Avoid alcohol containing products.  Break off pieces of aloe vera plant & apply sap to  skin.  Consider non-steroidal anti-inflammatory meds to reduce pain.  Don’t yank off peeling skin or burst blisters. Seek medical care for severe pain, fever, lack of improvement of symptoms within several days or if a large surface area is blistered.

Sun burn: Medications such as aspirin, ibuprofen, and Naproxen to decrease pain and inflammation are useful, especially when started early.For mild sunburn, cool compresses with equal parts of milk and water may suffice. Cold compresses with burow's solution may also be used. .Aloe vera gel or aloe-based lotions may soothe irritated skin. These can be found in the drugstore. Prescription topical steroids.

Several: Avoid additional sun exposure; topical lidocaine, aloe vera gel anti-inflammatory medications.  Filtering shower head to remove chlorine and toxins from shower water; moisturizing creams with essential oil of lavender will having a soothing and healing affect as well.

Number one best : Treatment is avoidance.   Other than that keep it moisturized and treat the pain.... If blisters develop... Or pain can not be controlled then see your pcp and ask for a dermatological referral.  I have used silvadene (silver sulfadiazine) in the past if it is contraindicated based on burn location, etc.

Cool compresses: When you notice a sunburn the damage has already been done.  You basically are trying to make the child comfortable.  Cool compresses  can actually reduce some stored heat that may still be present in the skin.  Analgesics such as Acetaminophen or ibuprophen should help with pain.  Aloe may also be soothing.
