Period delay: After 35, the ovary needs more stimulation to ovulate. If ovulation then occurs, the period will begin in about 14 days (if not pregnant, of course). A delay in ovulation is therefore going to delay the onset of your period.  This kind of effect can be avoided by using oral bcp's, (if there are no contraindications) also reducing PMS and the effects of estrogen withdrawal.

Menstrual cycles: It is common for young women to skip a period or have irregular cycles.  It is also more likely to happen if you are very athletic, gain or lose weight, using birth control pills, or have an eating disorder.  Still, if you are sexually active, you could be pregnant.  I would track your cycles to see if it happens often and see your doctor if you notice that it becomes more irregular.

Did you have sex.: If you had sex since your last period, pregnancy needs to be ruled out and you should do a pregnancy test. Use first morning urine and follow the instructions for the test carefully.
If you do not wish to be pregnant, use contraception all the time, every time. You may consider implanted contraceptive, or IUD. 
Practice safe sex. 
Get HPV vaccine.

Other causes can be an anovulatory cycle (you simply do not ovulate that month), anxiety, thyroid disease, rapid weight gain, medications, hormonal imbalances, uterine fibroids, uterine scarring, etc. etc.  If your period misses again, see the Doctor. Missed Period: It is not uncommon for a woman to miss a menstrual bleed at one time or another during her reproductive years.  This can certainly occur around the time of discontinuing birth control pills as well.  However, any time you miss a menstrual period, if you have been sexually active in the past several week, you should have a  pregnancy test done.
