been on depo, period stopped completely after i got the first shot. its been 1 yr on depo-provera & no period. now brown/red blood and cramps out the blue?

Can happen: Depo-provera is a long-acting hormone that slows then stops the growth of the lining of the uterus (which gets shead when you have your menses). After a while, the lining of the uterus can get so thin that small blood vessels are exposed, causing irregular spotty bleeding. If heavy or lasting more than a week, see a gynecologist.

Amenorrhea: If you were being treated for amenorrhea ( no periods) a common therapy is to give Provera (medroxyprogesterone) for 5 days and wait for your period in 1 or 2 weeks after last dose. If that does not work, estrogen can be given for 21 days followed by Provera (medroxyprogesterone) and again wait for your period. If that doest work your physician must rule out other medical conditions that cause amenorrhea.

Possible: To ovulate before you have a period. And get pregnant .Also for some women it can take 6 months or longer to restore a normal cycle when coming off the depoprovera shot. Once off Depo-Provera shot you are considered no longer protected. If you think you may be pregnant do a pregnancy test.

Normal: Depoprovera is highly effective for birth control. It's common to cause a change or a stopping of periods.

Unusual: What you are describing is a condition called luf syndrome which is where you ovulate but no egg is released. It is controversial whether this even exists and if so would require serial ultrasounds and blood tests to diagnose. Almost all women who ovulate release an egg. Provera (medroxyprogesterone) can take a week after you finish for the period to start.

Unlikely: Depo Provera (medroxyprogesterone) generally works for 3 months to prevent pregnancy. Its most common "side effect" is amenorrhea or no period. Most women on Depo-Provera do not have a period. Some will have intermittent spotting. Few have regular periods while on Depo-Provera provera.

Probably not: How long has it been since your last Depo-Provera shot?  Stress from surgery may affect your hormonal balance, but probably just a coincidence.

Not likely: Depo-provera is very good at preventing pregnancy so presuming you are not pregnant when you received the shot in february, it is unlikely that you would be at this point. Yes: Yes however it can take a long time for some women to return their ovulation to normal after depo. If you are not having regular menses i would see your doctor and have an evaluation for the exact cause.
