have a hiatal hernia, im prescribed 40mg protonix long term (in year 2 of taking it), can i/should i, take a probiotic pill in addition? will it help

Unlikely: There is no objective evidence that "probiotics" provide benefit.
Wish you good health! - Have a diet rich in fresh vegetables, fruits, whole grains, milk and milk products, nuts, beans, legumes, lentils and small amounts of lean meats. Avoid saturated fats. Drink enough water daily, so that your urine is mostly colorless. Exercise at least 150 minutes/week and increase the intensity of exercise gradually. Do not use tobacco, alcohol, weed or street drugs in any form. 
Practice safe sex, if you have sex.

i just read that protonix (pantoprazole) may increase qtc.  is taking a probiotic safe with long qt?  could a probiotic replace protonix (pantoprazole)? foods to avoid w/ long qt?

QT 474?: QT is borderline Nl and may not have been adjusted for heart rate and may have been calculated by machine. (Notorious for overcalling QT prolongation.) Unless you have been diagnosed with prolonged QT syndrome or have other members of family with QT prolongation I would not worry. Long term protonix (pantoprazole) use has rarely been associated with low magnesium which may prolong QT.

what is the best recommended order (or times) to take the following..... protonix, zetia, magnisium (taurate,malate,& glycinate=1 pill), sulcrafate, fish oil & probiotics?  what can be taken together and what should be taken separately?

This might help: Protonix needs to be taken with an empty stomach, early in the morning (1 hour or more before breakfast) or in the night (2-4 hours after last meal, before bed). Don't take any other drug at the same time.
Zetia can be taken at any time. You need to take it at the same time every day.Sulcralfate need to be taken 1 hour before every meal.Dietary supplements have no time preference nor food interact

Yes: Products that introduce healthy gut bacteria are safe for use in kids.

can taking probiotics prevent clostridium difficile infections?

Accepted Answer

Yes.: Studies have shown that probiotics can prevent c.Diff infections and other antibiotic associated complications like diarrhea.  Best way to prevent c.Diff infections is good hand washing if you visit a hospital or nursing home.  Also by not taking antibiotics for viral illnesses like bronchitis and sinusitis.  You increase your risk of c. Diff when you take abx for things like these.

Not really...: C. Difficile, when pathologic, is a bacterial infection and as such warrants specialized antibiotic treatment with documentation of eradication following such appropriate therapy. That being said, a special probiotic (florastor = sacchromyces boulardes) can help inhibit growth of c.Diff, can help reduce recurrence in at risk populations, and may possibly prophylax against c.Diff infection.

C. Difficile: Saccharomyces boulardii &amp;  Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG have been used but I  can't speak to their effectiveness.

Accepted Answer

No: If you truly have C. diff in a severe form, most likely no, they will not cause a false negative.  sometimes it is better to collect three different samples from three different times to be sure.

what is the best diet & probiotic to build my resistance to my c-diff coming back now that i am recovering?

Accepted Answer

: Probiotics containing Saccharomyces boulardii and Lactobacillus casei have been the most studied and appear to be effective. However, products are not standardized and there is enormous variation one to another. More is not necessarily better.

No: Taking "probiotics" will not affect the test for C diff, nor will taking probiotics do you any good.
