Like a map: The growth chart is read like a map. When you look for a spot on the map, you need 2 reference points: the x axis (horizontal line at the bottom) and the y axis (vertical line on the left side of the page). So, find your child's age at the bottom, and follow it up till it coincides with the height on the left side of the page. That meeting point tells you where your child falls compared to others.

Correct Measurement?: Exellent question! the problem isn't the growth chart, it is the quality of the measurement plotted onto the growth chart. When a point on a growth chart doesn't seem right, the measurement should be taken again. It is so easy to make measurement mistakes in length and height depending on how the measurement is taken and whether the child is moving around. Remember to take the shoes off!

Growth chart is it!: To many factors to consider, but growth potential (parental height), nutrition and underlying illnesses (ie. Heart, metabolic, gastrointestinal, genetic, etc) may play a role. Talk with your doctor and ask to see the growth chart. In it is the key to being reassured or finding reason for further work up.

Odd measurements: If your 16 mo boy measures 26.5 inches i would have done a workup on him for failing to grow months ago. He should measure 32 inches or so with his parental genes.If he has been diagnosed with a major medical problem, syndrome or other issue, this might be expected, but not in an otherwise normal kid.

Growth curve: Will be plotted every time you visit your pediatrician, the rate of growth slows alot after the second year compared to the first year of life which can seem concerning, ask your doc to show you his growth curve.
