Many things: Polyhydramnios (too much amniotic fluid around the fetus) may happen for several reasons.  The most common reason is that the mother has gestational diabetes.  Anything that prevents a fetus from swallowing amniotic fluid can also cause polyhydramnios, including structural problems in the baby's mouth or throat or stomach, or muscular or neurologic problems.  We never find the cause of some cases.

High Sugars Cause It: If mom's blood sugar is high, the baby's is too. The same way high sugars cause an adult to urinate more, this high sugar.  Causes the baby to make more urine, and the baby's urine is what makes up the amniotic fluid.

Yes.: Any fetal digestive tract obstruction may lead to polyhydramnios, with upper lesions associated with more severe poly. Hirschprung's may cause polyhydramnios rarely.
