Policosanol: Policosanol is a combination of alcohols which haven't been shown to do anything positive. Couldn't find any foods containing it.

what are policosanol supplements uses?

Accepted Answer

Policosanol: Companies selling policosanol claim it can help lower cholesterol.  It's a product made from sugar cane.  Many of the positive studies come from cuba, which grows the cane used to make the product.  Studies outside cuba (south africa, germany, canada, etc) didn't show effectiveness.  So, it seems more needs to be learned or shown about this one.

can you take policosanol while also taking lescol (fluvastatin)?

Accepted Answer

Yes: Policosanol is an Insulin sensitizing agent, used for Insulin resistance syndrome, or pre-diabetes, and raises the HDL or good cholesterol, while lowering LDL bad cholesterol.  The only interaction seems to be with levodopa, used for treating parkinson's disease.

Should be: Policosanol is a herbal medicine allegedly helpful
in treating cholesterol related problems, just as Lescol (fluvastatin) is;i am not aware of any problems associa ted with the combination;but then policosanol has
not been that well studied in this country, so the
answer is uncertain;it could, conceivably potentiate statin side effects, such as heoatotoxicity as well as mypathies so caution is
recommended.

Meds: should not be an issue.  You can check with your pharmacist and doctor too regarding your specific case.  There was a book that was PDR of herbs and alternative medications called the German Commission E book, as Europe much more pro herb/supplement than we are in the States.

Yes: Yes, you can use the two together. You should know that neither drug has outcome data that support their use.

No: We can only prescribe to those who see us, and we know who they are, know their allergies and are covered by insurances and we know would be sage to do so. Our system had a telemedicine, wherein, our own patients can go on the insurance computer for us and we can give them their medicine but not for consultation as this, too risky for you and for us, medico legally.
