Depends on which: Depends on which ligament and which joint (e.g. Knee: mcl ligament sprains can heal on their own, whereas acl complete tears will not heal on their own and may need surgery).

Unstable?: Isolated cruciate injury in inactive people that is stable from other support structures does not need anything other than exercise. PE and MRI: The first step is checking for an acl injury is talking to the patient about their injury and doing a good physical exam of the knee (pe). At this point, most skilled doctors will have a strong suspicion that the acl is torn. X-rays are usually done to make sure there isn't a bad bone injury. Often a MRI is obtained to confirm the diagnosis and look for other, associated injuries.

May well be the case: First, prolo- or sclerotherapy is an area of hot controversy, and may not be considered favorable where you live.  However, I have experienced some amazing benefits when it has been used by a skillful osteopath or physiatrist.  Facet instability may well respond but local facet blocks could also be considered. Depends on laxity: If you have an acute (recent) PCL tear that does not cause much laxity, you will probably be treated with physical therapy that stresses aggressive rehabilitation of the quadriceps muscles, which are in the front of the thigh. Acute PCL tear that causes significant laxity or if you have injured more than one ligament, you may need surgery to repair or reconstruct your pcl.

Trauma or fall: Injuries to the anterior and posterior cruciate ligaments most commonly occur because of a traumatic injury (football tackle, soccer collision, etc) or a traumatic fall (skiing or snowboarding fall).  Another cause could be from an auto accident (where the knees strike the lower dashboard area.  Certainly there  are other mechanisms for these injuries as well.
