: "Plan B" medications are essentially birth control pills with respect to hormonal content.  Taking them after unprotected sex can prevent implantation of a fertilized egg, but not !00% of the time.  If your period is delayed , obtain a serum HCG test after the period is five days or more "late", to be certain about pregnancy.

The Plan B: Causes a delay in ovulation, so that the egg should not get released and therefore not be available to the sperm to fertilize it. If a woman had already ovulated, then the Plan B wouldn't work.

It can do both: Plan B is a high dose of hormones given all at once. The idea is to disrupt the normal hormonal balance to delay or to prevent ovulation. When used correctly it decreases the risk of pregnancy by about 70%. One can not determine in any one individual whether or not it will delay ovulation, prevent ovulation or not work during any one menstrual cycle. Use birth control to avoid this issue

Plan B: Yes - waiting 24 hours after sex is ok. Plan B One-Step is up to 89 % effective when taken within 72 hours (3 days) after unprotected sex. It can reduce chance of pregnancy by up to 95% if used within 24 hours. It continues to reduce the risk of pregnancy up to 120 hours (5 days) after unprotected sex, but is less effective as time passes.

: Plan B has more than one mechanism of action. The important issue is to take Plan B within 72 hours of sex for it to be 95% effective. Better that you take contraceptive all the time, every time. Consider getting an IUD or an implant.

: EC is expected to work if it is taken within the time frame listed, for most up to 72 hours from exposure.  its effectiveness does not depend on when you ovulate.

: If ovulation occurs ( "fertile days" ) and your contraceptive is "Plan B", pregnancy may occur, as Plan B is not 100% effective.  If your period is delayed, obtain a "home" pregnancy test five days after the expected onset of your period. If positive, see your GYN physician for guidance.

: "Plan B" is not 100% effective for contraception.  If your periods are usually "regular" ( 24-32 days apart), the delay may be secondary to pregnancy. Obtain a "home" pregnancy test and if positive , see your GYN physician for a exam and further testing (ultrasound).
