Plan B: Plan b may can cause you to delay your period.  You may want to see your obgyn or primary care provider who can do an in depth menstrual history and, if needed, a physical exam to determine if further work-up is needed.  It also depends on how long it has been since you took the plan b. Most likely, your menses will come, but it might be reassuring to you to get your doctor's opinion.

Pregnancy: Plan b is not full proof and has a strict timeline in relation to time of unprotected sex. Pregnancy tests are not 100% accurate and can be negative if tested to early as most detect a hormone in the urine which may have not reached detectable levels if tested before 7-10 days post conception, for most home pregnancy kits. I would suggest retesting to be sure.

Likely not pregnant: Plan B can disrupt 1-2 menstrual cycles resulting in later than expected periods.  It is likely that you are not  pregnant given the negative test in the doctor's office.  Follow up with doctor in one week if you are still without a period.

Pregnancy tests are available at any pharmacy and in minutes you will have your answer. They can detect a pregnancy 7-10 days after conception. The best time to take one is when you miss your period.

PLAN B: Potential side effects with emergency contraception can include: tender breasts; changes in menstrual flow (spotting, bleeding, early or late period); loose stools; dizziness; headache; nausea/ vomiting; abdominal discomfort or feeling tired. If you develop chest tightness, difficulty breathing, swelling of lips, mouth, throat – call 911.  Notify your doctor if you miss your period.  Cont’d.

It can happen: Irregular bleeding after taking a morning-after pill like Plan B, or Ella (ulipristal) is somewhat common. Some women get spotting or bleeding before the next period. A urine pregnancy test should be done 3 weeks after taking a morning-after pill, to be sure there is no pregnancy.

Yes: Planb is most effective when taken within 72 hours of unprotected intercourse.  If you take planb, expect some irregular bleeding and a delay in your next cycle.  Also, check a pregnancy test at least 2 weeks after unprotected intercourse.

Check instructions: Plan B One-Step® is a single pill you take by mouth. It must be taken within 72 hours after unprotected sex or birth control failure. The sooner you take it, the better it works. Plan B One-Step® should not be taken as regular birth control. Plan B One-Step® is not as effective as using a regular birth control method correctly and consistently. If you have unprotected sex after taking Plan B One-Step®, it will not prevent you from getting pregnant.
