However several times I have seen a woman who has never had sex get pid.  The infection comes from bacteria in the vagina for some reason we don't understand getting up into the uterus and causing the infection.

Women admitted as an emergency with an iud-associated pelvic abscess, which is the worst form of pid, are at risk of dying, and generally require a huge amount of cardiovascular support from the anesthesiologist while the definitive surgery is performed.
