Avoid peanuts: Currently, the only treatment for peanut allergy is strict avoidance, having self-injectable Epinephrine available, a written anaphylaxis action plan and wearing a medical ID.  Reading food labels and being aware of cross contamination is key.   An allergist can assist in discussing prognosis and future treatments.

Avoidance: Currently the only treatment for food allergies including peanut is complete avoidance, and having Epinephrine for accidental exposure.  There are ongoing clinical trials attempting to desensitize children with peanut allergy and results are promising but still preliminary.

Not yet: Peanut allergy and it's treatment is an area of very active research. Cuurrently treatment consists of avoidance and having epi available if exposure occurs. On going clinical trials are exploring ways of having patients eats peanuts and seeing the effects. The data is promising but preliminary and not yet ready for wide spread use.

Peanut allergy: The most serious risk is immidiate allergic responce with swelling of larynx which if not treated can be fatal, and late effects with rash, wheezing and cough are slow to develope and easy to treat.So if you have peanut allergy you carry Epipen (epinephrine) with you all the time.

No : Persons with peanut allergy are at increased risk to have nut allergies and other legume allergies (about 10% have pea, bean, soy).  They are not at risk for avocado allergy.  However, persons with latex allergy are more likely to be allergic to avocado, kiwi, and chestnuts.

Yes: Allergy can develop at any time or any age.

Accepted Answer

Storage proteins: Seeds, legumes, and nuts all contain storage proteins.  They are similar and you can have cross reaction between all of them.  So if you are primarily allergic to cashew (which is a tree nut), you may also react to peanut (a legume), or even sesame seed (a seed).

Accepted Answer

Yes: Peanut allergy resolves in some patients, but most cases are persistent.  Don't try eating it without appropriate consultation with a board certified allergist.

Accepted Answer

Unlikely to outgrow: People usually do not outgrow peanut allergy, so one can get his blood tested or his skin tested, and then see the allergist to perhaps eat a peanut butter cookie at the allergist's office, and stay there for a while to watch for any reactions. Anaphylaxis can occur with peanut allergy, so patients usually carry an epi-pen self-injector for emergencies.

No: Reaction to peanuts / peanut butter is a reaction to peanuts / peanut butter. There is no categorization or differentiation between "cheap"  or "expensive " peanuts/ peanut butter.
