Possible: Peanut desensitization is an emerging option for pt with peanut allergy. However, this is still in the investigational stage and not all patient are candidates. If one is interested in this treatment option, i would strongly encourage speaking with an academic center that is actively researching this area.

Accepted Answer

Avoid peanuts: Currently, the only treatment for peanut allergy is strict avoidance, having self-injectable Epinephrine available, a written anaphylaxis action plan and wearing a medical ID.  Reading food labels and being aware of cross contamination is key.   An allergist can assist in discussing prognosis and future treatments.

Allergic reaction: The peanut allergy is variable you may have simple changes like hives, itchy skin, drip nose. The worse reactions are airway closure ad life threatening allergic reactions.
If every time you are exposed to peanuts something happens see an allergist for testing. The peanut allergy can be quite severs.

Not yet: Peanut allergy and it's treatment is an area of very active research. Cuurrently treatment consists of avoidance and having epi available if exposure occurs. On going clinical trials are exploring ways of having patients eats peanuts and seeing the effects. The data is promising but preliminary and not yet ready for wide spread use.

Accepted Answer

No : Persons with peanut allergy are at increased risk to have nut allergies and other legume allergies (about 10% have pea, bean, soy).  They are not at risk for avocado allergy.  However, persons with latex allergy are more likely to be allergic to avocado, kiwi, and chestnuts.

Absolutely: Do not fail to disclose peanut allergy if you have a true allergy, i.e. Your tongue swells, & you get"anaphylaxis", (where your throat "closes up"& u can't breathe).  Depending on the job and your employer, it may not jeopardize ur getting the job, but depending how extreme ur allergy, if a co-worker even walks thru the room with peanuts, it may be 911 time.Carry an Epipen (epinephrine) on ur person, 1@home&1@work.

No : Peanut allergy is potentially a very serious and life threatening allergy. The current standard of care is avoidance and having an injectable Epinephrine available if needed for a reaction. There are clinical trials ongoing with new potential forms of treatment but they are not yet ready for routine clinical use.

Unusual: It would be unusual for a baby to have peanut allergies. Babies should not consume peanuts, or other nuts, until at least a year of age. Allergies are caused by multiple exposures to something that your body does not like. As such, unless the baby was in an environment where they were frequently exposed to peanut dust, it would unusual for them to react. If concerned, see their doctor.

Yes: Some allergic reactions are mild and only cause a rash. Others can be fatal by constricting the breathing tube.

Accepted Answer

Not long: Swelling from a food allergy reaction typically lasts an hour or two. I'm hoping that you're not asking to determine "whether it's worth it." intentional exposures to a food allergen, even if the reaction is mild, can lead to increasing sensitivity over time. If you're allergic to a food, it's best to completely avoid it.
