It doesn't: One 1995 paper, a speculative essay, is the basis for "holistic" claims that pantothenic acid helps acne.  The only peer-reviewed paper is ped derm 2002 suggesting that a pantothenic acid helps with the rough side-effects of the topical retinoic acid that actually works.  I start with topical Clindamycin with or without a retinoic acid derivative, move to systemic antibiotics if needed.

Supplements: Since the FDA doesn't investigate supplements, most physicians are reluctant to recommend them as they're unsure of efficacy, dosage and there are concerns about the presence of contaminants. Deficiency of vit b5 is quite unusual and I doubt that it's worthwhile taking it. Your pharmacist may have more information for you,however.

i'm taking pantothenic acid because it helps with my acne but was wondering how many pills a day of 500mg can one take? i've been taking  2 pills a say sometimes 4. on the bottle islt says to take 1 a day but i've seen people take crazy of 15 pills

500mg per day:  is recommended for most. Pantothenic acid or Vitamin B5 is a water soluble vitamin which means that excess is likely to be urinated out of the body.
