A pinched nerve: The most common reason for back pain that shoots down the leg is a pinched nerve which may be due to:
1.  A herniated disc
2.  Spinal stenosis
3.  A slipped vertebra (spondylolisthesis)
4.  Other reasons (tumor, infection, etc.)

seek medical attention if there is progressive worsening of pain, numbness, weakness, tingling, or bowel/bladder issues.

Fact: Muscle tend to tense up during cold. It is the response before shivering to generate more heat. The muscle tension may worsen the pain.
For good health - Have a diet rich in fresh vegetables, fruits, whole grains, milk and milk products, nuts, beans, legumes, lentils and small amounts of lean meats. Avoid saturated fats. Drink enough water daily, so that your urine is mostly colorless. Exercise at least 150 minutes/week and increase the intensity of exercise gradually. Do not use tobacco, alcohol, weed or street drugs in any form. 
Practice safe sex.

MRI or EMG: Would see your doctor for a possible MRI  and emg. Anxiety can certainly exacerbate symptoms. Depending on results, would try to treat medically.

Spine: After a fusion arthritis can occur above and below the fused segments of the spine.  It sounds like your surgery was many years ago.  If you so not have a spine surgeon it would be a good idea to see someone soon to have a look at your back and gets some new x-rays.

Lumbar disc pain: The big 3 causes of chronic low back pain are sacro-iliac joint dysfunction, facet syndrome and discogenic pain.  If your low back bothers you more when you stand for a while then your pain could be primarily facet in origin.  If sitting for a while as well as bending over at the waist is your worst problem then you most likely have a discogenic pain syndrome.  Core strengthening should help you.

It may be a specific: Type of disc herniation that is located at the point where the nerve exits the spine and when lying down on your back or stomach the nerve exit hole or foramen is narrowed so if a disc is present there it will further compress the nerve.  Where your back hurts does not necessarily have to match the leg pain.  If it persists, worsens or is associated with any neurologic symptoms, see your physician.

Disk perhaps: A common cause would be a disk herniation (rupture, slip) in the low back. It can also be caused by nerve irritation by bone spurs in the low back. Less commonly, disk injury without herniation can also cause this type of symptoms. Often such problems will improve with time. Seek help if you have problems emptying your bladder or you have weakness in the leg muscles.
