Fast follicle growth: In the final days before ovulation the dominant follicle grows rapidly, and it is usually this rapid growth of the dominant follicle that women feel.  When the egg actually releases from the follicle, that happens because of a thinning of the wall of the follicle and the egg "leaks" out, not "bursts" out as many women think.  So the pain sensation typically precedes actual ovulation.

Hard to say: One study demonstrated that the twinges associated with ovulation was not the actually egg being released but was the final growth of the follicle a day or so prior to ovulation. Again sex every other day would resolve the timing issue for most patients.

Trust the pain: I would err on trusting the pain. But, if you are trying to get pregnant the issue is not the specific day, but getting sperm into the vagina on the five days before ovulation.  So, whether ovulation occurs on the 21st or 22nd, you should be getting exposed to sperm on the 16th through  the 22nd.
