Depends: For local reaction use a cold compress, elevation, acetaminophen. For large local reaction - like the entire arm - do the same. You can add an antihistamine like allegra (fexofenadine). For an allergic reaction - hives all over, difficulty breathing, nausea, vomiting, feeling faint or loss of consciousness, give epinephrine, albuterol, elevate feet, loosen clothes, & call 911. Later see an allergist for testing.

Bee Stings: Benadryl (diphenhydramine) will help with itching.  And some people suggest making a paste of baking soda and meat tenderizer, and applying it to the site.

Not really: There is no good, permantly effective desensitization.  Keep the Epipen (epinephrine) handy and teach a friend/significant other how to use it.

Venom allergy shots: Venom immunotherapy (venom shots) is recommended for patients with systemic reactions such as anaphylaxis to stinging insects. Once testing has determined which stinging insects someone is allergic to, gradually increasing doses of venom are injected in the allergists office according to varying schedules. Once the maintenance dosage is reached injections are generally given every 4 to 8 weeks.

Ice: There are many different remedies for an insect sting.  I like to use an ice cube and rub the site down. For me this helps relieve the stinging pain.

There are over the counter remedies that you can use if you have them with you when you get stung.

It seems like i always have some ice around.

Depends: Most people who are stung by bees just get a red, swollen itchy "bump" in the area...Wshing it right away..Using ice...Applying cortisone cream and taking an antihistamine usually provides relief.

Allergic reaction: If you have swelling of mouth, lips, tongue or airway with hives and /or shortness of breath - this mandates immediate medical attention. If you have an epi-pen this would be the right time to use it.

Tx: Remove stinger by scraping along edge of skin with a credit card.  Clean with soap & warm water.  Apply ice in 10 minute. Increments; alternating 10 on & 10 off.  Tylenol, (acetaminophen) Aspirin or Motrin for pain or Benadryl for swelling.  Make a paste of 2 parts baking soda & 1 part water & apply.   Or you can apply a meat tenderizer poultice to the area. Throat, airway or tongue  swelling – call 911.
