Atopic dermatitis: Mild atopic dermatitis or eczema can be treated by a variety of otc meds . Most of these are moisturizing or hydrating agents. They need to be use regularly. You can also use hydrocortisone otc one - four times a day for a week. Sometimes you may need antihistamines to treat the itching associated with it. Eczema can be persistent or recurrent and in such cases you will need prescription meds.

Dandruff treatment: Dandruff (seborrheic dermatitis) is a chronic skin condition that can be treated but not cured.  It tends to flare with season changes and when a person is experiencing stress.  Over the counter dandruff shampoos are a good place to start treating dandruff and most of the time do a good job helping.  Severe dandruff needs to be seen by a doctor for some prescriptions and for possible tests.

i have a light seborrheic dermatitis on my forehead and cheeks. what is a good over the counter treatment to fight the scaling and to reduce the redness from it.

Seborrheic: For your face and cheeks as opposed to your scalp like most people deal with, I would suggest you start with some OTC 1% hydrocortisone cream just on the affected areas twice a day until the lesions clear up and then stop the cream so your skin doesn't get used to the cream and have other issues as a reaction to chronic hydrocortisone use and then just use as needed.

Skin care: General skin care: keep affected areas clean, moisturize your skin,  avoid prolonged sun exposure, hydrate yourself well.  As for specific dermatitis treatment, kindly follow your doctor / dermatologist advice and prescribed medications, wish you wellness

Cetaphil: The product line includes gentle cleansers and moisturizers, and is widely available.  More importantly look into the cause of the perioral dermatitis. Avoid whitening toothpastes and dental products. Steroids- including topical, nasal and oral inhalors- can also cause this condition.  See link:

i have seborrheic dermatitis; it's driving me crazy.  what can i do. tried over-the-counter stuff, wholistic stuff, and dr. now has me on  a topical spray that doesn't help.   there has to be more.

Seborrheic : Seborrheic dermatitis is caused by inflammation and is very common this time of year.  Treatment options include topical steroid creams and lotions (such as desonide) as well as Ketoconazole Cream which reduces the yeast count that sometimes contributes to this condition. These are prescription products that work for most of my patients and i often use them in combination with good results.  If you have scalp involvement, there are some foams and shampoos and oil treatments that can be helpful.

Yes OTC: For patients with seborrheic dermatitis of the face, we suggest treatment with a low potency topical corticosteroid cream, a topical antifungal agent, or a combination of the two.

Seborrhea: This type of skin disorder usually responds to a mild steroid cream like the OTC 1% hydrocortisone but occasionally in cases that are more resistant and complicated, a higher potency treatment regimen is needed. In this case, a visit to your primary doctor first would be best.

Prescription: none otc I can think of.  Do not use steroid creams because in the end it will make it worse.  Some have had success with low dose doxycycline, but that is prescription.
