Depends: This is difficult to answer because it depends on the location on the body.  In addition, there are certain moisturizers that we can rec. But when the skin is really bad a topical steroid, usually prescription, is given.

Hydrocortisone: Also look for moisterizers with ceremides. Eucerin, aveeno eczema care, etc. First soak in water for a long time----at least until fingers wrinkle----then rub in cream soon after. Benadryl (diphenhydramine) will not help eczema nor will it reduce itch.

Moisturizers: Anything over the counter that can help moisturize the skin will be beneficial.  I personally like eucerin cream.  Its available in large jars and if you "drip dry" and apply liberally, it will help seal in the moisture and help the skin heal.

Hydrocortisone: Most eczema responds to steroid creams, and the strongest over the counter steroid is 2.5% hydrocortisone, in most places. It's safe in areas that aren't around the eyes or in the mouth. There's some debate about whether ointments or creams are better, and it really depends on where you're using it and how much you use. You'll need a doctor for anything stronger.

what is the best way to treat dyshidrosis eczema over the counter?

Nothing great OTC: Dyshidrosis affects hands and feet where the skin is quite thick and tough. Hard for medications even to get through to the live layers of skin. Hydrocortisone 1% ointment is probably the best OTC there is, and if you wear cotton gloves over a generous application that may help improve penetration but prescription medication is best.

See your pediatricia: No antibiotics are needed unless infection see you pediatrician. There are topical therapies available if needed. Good general skin care and moisturizer use will help. Sometimes diet/food allergies may play a fool in worsening eczema.

i have a small patch of eczema on the back of my leg that i have had since i was a child. it comes and goes and i treat it with over-the-counter creams. is there a prescription solution for this?

Maybe: There are prescription creams for eczema which are not necessarily going to be a cure.There are also some preventive other meds.We cannot prescribe on this platform,so you should speak to your doctor for that.Over-the-counter moisturizers(white, unscented creams or lotions)or ointment like Aquaphor can help.Over-the-counter,lower strength hydrocortisone creams,used sparingly can also help.

Eczema : You could oilatum junior cream for now.
Consider going on an allergen free diet in the future. 
Allergex  syrup for itch.

if not, what is the strongest over the counter eczema cream you would recommend similar to dovate (the only one that worked for me)?
the affected areas are mainly on my hands.
