if you were unknowingly infected with syphilis  and taking penicillin for oral surgery could that inadvertently cure the syphilis infection?

Accepted Answer

Probably not: You would be much more likely to only mask the symptoms than to actually cure it.  The doses required to treat syphilis are probably quite a bit higher than what you are getting for oral surgery.  If you think there is any chance you could have syphilis you should get tested and treated properly. Otherwise the long term effects could be devastating.

in reference to my previous questions(oral sex from a girl and now taking doxy as a precaution)i understand syphilis is possible in this scenario but how common is it. would the clinic give me penicillin as a precaution as well. im just freaked out?

: The chance of syphilis in this situation is near zero and I would have recommended you not take doxycycline, or that you get penicillin. But as long as you have started doxycycline, you should continue to take it for 2 weeks at a dose of 100 mg twice daily.

Doxycycline: Doxycycline for 2-4 weeks is recommended if penicillin cannot be given, or sometimes ceftriaxone. However, penicillin is by far the best drug. If you had a severe penicillin allergy in the past, then probably penicillin should be avoided. Otherwise, it still might be the best choice for you. Discuss it with your doctor or, even better, an infectious diseases or STD specialist.

STD prophylaxis: Syphilis is very susceptible to penicillin, and the prophylactic dose is sufficient to protect, but a sustained blood level is given by only certain types of penicillin, so check with your physician to see which kind was given.

7 days: 1 injection of benzathine penicillin will cure secondary syphillis.  It will maintain blood levels of penicillin for over 15 days.  It takes 7 days of continuous penicillin levels in the blood to cure secondary syphillis.

my ex cheated on me i got tested and found out i had syphilis. i got the penicillin shot. titer at the start was 1:34. after 6 months ive just been tested again and im at 1:8. my next testing is in 6 more months. is it likely i will be negative?

: . This titer may become nonreactive over time or remain  less than 1:8 permanently.

Syphilis: Yes. But they are not as effective. Many doctors will treat with the second line therapies unless there is brain involvement or a treatment failure to eradicate the syphilis. In this event they work to temporarily desensitize the patient of their penicillin allergy and then give the better treatment.

Syphilis treatment: It is thought that with the appropriate penicillin shot to treat a syphilis infection that one is less likely to be contagious within seven days post treatment.

But, if one has other infections or has neurosyphilis they will likely need more than on treatment.

: Regardless of stage, within 24 hours of receiving penicillin there is little if any risk of transmission. For a large margin of safety, most experts and official agencies (e.g. CDC, public health departments) recommend not resuming sex until a week has passed. Late syphilis (more than a year in duration) is not transmissible at all except by pregnant women to a baby she is carrying.

tested positive for syphilis & got one penicillin injection july 1, 14 days now most signs are gone. still some tongue discolor. how long to be normal?

Accepted Answer

Syphilis: I know I am the second to respond to this. But, My concern is that a discoloration of the tongue could be other things.  Your physician will, at this point, know your syphilis antibodies count and will know if they need to retreat you or just follow with a repeat test in three months. But, if the tongue issue does not resolve you may want your dentist to take a look as well.
