hello. how common is oral herpes ( cold sore ) ? i know it don't go away. is it dangerous? i have had it since childhood. i get it when its cold.

Possible: Its possible to transmit oral or HSV1 to the genitalia like this.  Might be a good idea to call your family doc or gyn and see if they would prescribe some valtrex (valacyclovir).

Right: Almost everyone has been exposed to that virus.  It resides within us all.  When we have a dip in our resistance, these herpes ulcers can appear.

Yes: Cold sores are painful liquid filled blisters that can occur on the lips, roof of the mouth or the gums which are caused by the herpes simplex virus (hsv-1). Tingling ;/or pain can herald the oncoming of cold sore 1 to 2 days prior to eruption.
An estimated 80% of americans have been exposed to herpes simplex virus type 1. However, not all of those people will get cold sores.

Absolutely not: HSV is not transmitted through food or even though shared drinking glasses, utensils, etc. If no intimate contact with someone with oral herpes (e.g. kissing, oral sex) you are not at risk -- even if you share a house, kitchen, and bathroom with that person. Don't worry about it.

Likely: If the person has an active visible lesion, and you shared a drink, it is very likely that you were in contact with the virus.  You may already have it though.  Not everyone who has the virus gets an actual outbreak as it can remain dormant. Certain trigger events, susch as trauma, a cold, extra uv light, stress, may cause an outbreak, just like it did with your friend. Stay away from outbreaks.

Cold sore: If a cold sore wasn't noticable there is an excellent chance you will not get oral herpes from kissing your girlfriend

NO YOU CAN NOT BUT: No you can not get herpes by sharing drinking straw.Oral hepes is caused by hsv1 virus which causes cold sores.Most people have had this virus in childhood and if you share a straw with someone who has no lesions there is may be theoretically very very small risk of getting infected but in practice it is not really possible.
But as an advice you should not share straws as it is not hygienic.

HSV-1: Cold sores spread from person to person by close personal contact, such as kissing. Cold sores are caused by a herpes simplex virus (hsv-1) closely related to the one that causes genital herpes (hsv-2). Both of these herpes simplex viruses can affect your mouth or your genitals, and can be spread via oral sex. The virus can be transmitted to others even during times when you have no blisters.
