H ; P: This condition is diagnosed like almost all others:  by history and physical exam.  In this particular case, the history would be of painless, bilateral, symmetric visual changes that last 15-60 minutes and the exam would show no ocular findings to cause this.

Simple approaches: To stop the opthalmic issues, could hyperventilate into a plastic or paper bag for about 3-5 minutes, but will probably cause lightheadedness or faintness, and usher in the headache phase with a vengeance, so many folks do not tolerate this.  Maybe best to just prevent headache by using prescription or otc items.  See a headache specialist.

how can you tell difference between migraine pain in eye and abnormality in eye causing pain?

See your eye doctor: It can be difficult to tell the difference between migraine pain and pain coming from the eye.  Usually migraine pain will get better in several hours while pain from the eye is persistent.  Severe sinus congestion is also "felt" in the eye.  When in doubt it is always better to see an ophthalmologist to be sure.

Opthalmology consult: Without knowing the extent of your vision problem this question is hard to answer. You should consult with your Ophthalmologist (Eye doctor) about this. Also make certain you abide by any regulations on your driver's license if it is stated you need to wear your eyeglasses to drive. And keep in mind lutein &amp; zeaxanthin found in green leafy vegetables &amp; eggs may help lower risk of eye diseases.
