Omnipaque: is the trade name of a type of iodine-based X-ray contrast(dye).  The main use is in contrast enhanced CT scans, but there are other potential uses in radiology.  Allergies are rare, but can occur.  An allergic reaction to anything, omnipaque included, can range from minor(e.g. hives) to severe and life-threatening(anaphylaxis).

Iohexol: Is a non ionic, low osmolar iodinated contrast material commonly used in medical imaging, for example as IV contrast for a CT scan.   Allergic reaction is rare, but as in any allergic reaction, can vary from mild(e.g. hives) to life threatening anaphylaxis.

Omnipaque v omniscan: Sound similar and both from the same company, but actually two agents for different modalities. 
Omnipaque is an iodinated contrast agent used for CT imaging. 
Omniscan is a paramagnetic, gadolinium based contrast agent used for MRI and MRA.

: It depends on what is reason for the imaging study. Depending on that it could be ultrasound, CT or MRI.

i am to have omnipaque 350 x2 (one two hours prior, and one an hour prior to the scan with iv dye. will this cause diarrhea? otherwise healthy

Accepted Answer

Sometimes : Omnipaque is frequently used as a oral contrast agent for CTs. Some patients do report a cathartic effect with loose stools afterwards but frank diarrhea is not expected.

is it safe to take omnipaque while pregnant or breastfeeding?

Accepted Answer

Yes: No toxicity was shown in animal studies. The main issues is that it is a radio-graphic contract medium, so the question is what is going to be x-rayed? Many studies can be done without contrast. This would be a question for your doctor to review with the radiologist. Lactation studies haven't been reported, but i would recommend doing "pump&dump" for 24 hours after to clear it out.

Accepted Answer

The vast majority: of allergic and idiosyncratic reactions occur immediately or within minutes following injection.  Rarely, delayed reactions can occur.  By 24 hours most of the contrast is eliminated from your system via the kidneys/urine.  At 3 hours, you are highly unlikely to have a reaction.

Radiologist: It will be for your radiologist to determine the amount depending on the type of examination and the reason for the CT.

: You do not become radioactive with a CT scan, with or without a contrast.

i received a ct with 80ml omnipaque 350 and a mri with 10 ml gavist after i delivered. would this cause me to be radioactive? i held my son shortly after. i also didnt pause breastfeeding because no one said to. would these medicines hurt my son?

Accepted Answer

: No, these contrast agents are not radioactive and will not affect your son. There was no need to pause breastfeeding or pump and discard your milk because the tiny amounts that might appear in the breast milk would harmlessly pass through the baby.
