dad is booked in for key hole surgery to get biopsy of growth on plural of lung. had fluid drained no cancer cells in there - diagnosed with pneumonia from bloods in ed. previously worked with asbestos. what else could it be other than cancer?

: The growth may represent scar tissue, and it is reassuring that there were no cancer cells. Follow up with your PCP regarding cancer blood biomarkers, particularly if you have symptoms. An infection of the lungs and lining of the lungs may be the underlying cause, and ruling out TB is another consideration.

No: Thyroid  tumors are associated with a stimulatory factor arising in the pituitary.  Asbestos causes problems when the dust arising from the handling of asbestos gets into  the respiratory tract.  Under this situation many so  exposed develop mesothelisoma of the lining of the lung totally  unassociated with thyroid cancer which can also arise in early age from exposure of to H&amp;N radiation.

After the fact: It is not feasible to ascertain if you were even exposed to asbestos. If you were exposed, the amount of exposure can not be determined. If you wore a mask the risk is minimal. If you have access to any of the drywall and the joint compound, you could get it tested for asbestos, but that will testing after the fact .
