Stimulant: Coffee is a stimulant that can affect the GI tract. Many people would cut back to a half cup of coffee and take a psyillium fiber supplement like metamucil. If the problems persists, it is advisable to see your doctor in person.

my infant won't make a bowl movement unless i stick a thermometer in her rectum and move it around. is this normal? how do i get her to go on her own?

Bowel Movements: She will go on her own when she is ready to go.  The biggest mistake we as parents make is thinking our babies have to go everyday.  If you keep stimulating her with the thermometer, she will get to the point she will only go when she has that stimulus.  So stop doing that.  Some babies go multiple times a day, some go everyday, some go once a week.  Adults do that too.  Be patient.

Tenesmus: It happens by reflex, but two things- pain should not be intense, and it should not last but for a few seconds. Otherwise, ease see your doctor.

Maybe: Many people have an exaggerated gastro-colic reflex. There is no "normal" number of bowel movements.  If the stools are very loose or bloody, you are in pain or you are losing weight it can be a sign of an underlying food allergy or intolerance or other condition and you should mention it to your physician.

Probably: Eating stimulates a reflex which causes the urge to defecate. Many people have bowel movements soon after meals. I wouldn't be concerned unless you have a change in your bowel habits or notice bleeding.

Possibly!: This may be normal--breast milk is such a wonderful food for babies that most of it gets absorbed at this age, leaving little to make into bm's. If she's not in pain and her last bm was soft, you can wait another 1-2 days. If she had a hard bm last time or if she seems to be in pain, please call her doctor.

Believe doc: Slowing or cessation of diarrhea and no high grade fevers are good signs. Stay the course.
